Exploring the Different Phases of Orthodontic Treatment: A Step-by-Step Journey from age 7 to 70 - Dante Gonzales Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is a comprehensive process that sometimes involves multiple phases, each crucial for achieving a straight, healthy smile. From childhood to adulthood, patients embark on a transformative journey guided by orthodontic professionals like those at Dr. Dante Gonzales Orthodontics.

Phase 1 Interceptive Treatment: Evaluation and Planning (Ages 7-10) For the 10-15% of patients that need Phase I the journey typically begins with an initial evaluation at age 7. If there are major issues present that will make the case more complicated, or create the need for surgery later on, then we will recommend a Phase I Interceptive orthodontic treatment. During this phase, orthodontists address any major problems occurring that will effect the alignment of the teeth, jaw structure, and overall oral health. Some problems are betting addressed earlier rather than waiting until the patient has a full adult dentition.

Phase 2 or Comprehensive Treatment: Active Treatment (teenage or adult years). This treatment focuses on getting the teeth and bite into proper alignment. Traditional braces, clear aligners like Invisalign, or other orthodontic appliances are used to gradually move the teeth into their desired positions. Regular adjustments and monitoring ensure progress is on track.

Phase 3: Retention After any active treatment phase, patients transition to the retention phase, which involves maintaining the results achieved during treatment. Retainers are often prescribed at night to prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Compliance with retainer wear is essential for long-term success. And getting a “retainer check” appointment once every few years is helpful to monitor the teeth and bite during this phase.

At Dr. Dante Gonzales Orthodontics, our team is dedicated to guiding patients through each phase of their orthodontic journey with compassion, expertise, and personalized care. Whether you’re 7 or 70, we’re committed to helping you achieve a confident, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.
